Anders Børgesen is a ceramic artist who was born in Herning, Denmark in 1982.
While training to become an art teacher Børgesen was called to ceramics when he was exploring multiple artistic mediums and materials. Sculpture, and its corporeality, enraptured him from first contact: “From the moment I touched clay, it felt strangely familiar to me.” He hails inspiration from sources from all kinds–often taking from nature such as the patterns of pinecones or beehives, but also from other art, such as Michelangelo’s drawings for Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome, to mundane occurrences, like folds in fabric. Børgesen draws upon traditional methods of ceramics making from the golden age of Danish ceramics, looking to artists like Axel Salto and Arne Bang, along with contemporary elements to produce forms of refined construction and verve. At the heart of Børgesen’s practice is observation and intuition translated into his unbelievably precise yet fluid visual language.
Though Børgesen’s designs may strike the viewer as thoughtfully planned out and methodically executed, they tend to be led by both chance and a precise hand. He carefully creates his vessels from a single volume of clay, first, wheel-throwing, and then extensive hand-carving, allowing the ornamentation to be an essential part of the work itself rather than applied. His works embody a sense of vitality with its geometric patterns creating a visual illusion of movement, drawing the eye upward towards the vessel’s opening.
Børgesen has exhibited across Europe in Denmark, Belgium and France, including Ceramic Brussels and Collectible Brussels. In the fall of 2026, Børgesen’s work will make its debut in the United States with J. Lohmann Gallery.
Børgesen believes that “The magic of a sculpture happens when we feel the overwhelming urge to hold it in our hands and touch it.”
