J. Lohmann Gallery is pleased to present exceptional artists Sandra Davolio, Merete Rasmussen, Toni De Jesus, Ahryun Lee, Kazuhiro Toyama, Jongjin Park, Sara Dodd, Michèle Oberdieck, and Turi Heisselberg Pedersen at Design Miami’s 21st edition dedicated to the curatorial theme Make. Believe.

The selection of works chosen to be featured from these artists illustrate the intersection of innovation and technical excellence, creating works that push the boundaries of their mediums, so much so that you must see to believe. Armed with a sharp eye, a precise hand, and an explorative spirit, each artist infuses their pieces with a sense of liveliness and dynamism that are all born from their unique techniques.

Every piece requires not only a single look, but yet another in an attempt to absorb the impressive detail they imbue into every work while attempting to figure out how they accomplished such seamless forms. All of the featured artists work methodically, like Rasmussen who is inspired by intricate organic forms or complex mathematical equations made manifest in a physical form. Her result is a strong, flowing, and elegant creation of a seemingly optical illusion. Dodd is a master of movement as well in her work, creating her breathtaking, harmonious undulating forms by applying a delicate yet precise hand of repeated layers of liquid porcelain, slip, to her foundation. Layering porcelain is a technique applied by Jongjin Park too, but in an entirely unique way. He creates millefeuille vessels made from paper towels painted with porcelain slip and then fired to reveal surprising textures and colors.

With a mix of mastery and enthusiastic exploration, all of our featured artists expand upon their technical skills to forge unique techniques that produce imaginative works requiring a double take.
